Agrifence Short Earth Rod – 300mm
An electric fence is a circuit that closes through the ground, and this 300mm coated hardened steel rod is the return end of it. Agrifence fit it with a clamp rather than a wingnut, which makes it quicker to attach the earth lead and less likely to work loose. Poor earthing, not a tired energiser, is behind most fences that read low.
At 300mm this is a short rod, so it belongs with small portable set-ups and low-output energisers. Agrifence's own rule of thumb is one metre of earth rod for every joule of energy — a 2J energiser wants two full-length 2m stakes set at least 3m apart, not a handful of short ones.
<>Performance & Benefits
- Coated and hardened steel, so it drives into stony ground without mushrooming.
- Clamp fitting for the earth lead — quicker than a wingnut and less prone to loosening.
- 300mm length suits portable and low-output set-ups where a full 2m stake is impractical.
- Completes the circuit so the pulse returns to the energiser and the animal feels the fence.
- Can be used in multiples, spaced along a line, where ground conditions are poor.
Suitable For
- Small portable fences, strip grazing and temporary pens.
- Low-output battery and solar energisers.
- Ground too shallow, stony or rooty for a full-length stake.
- Adding an extra earth point to an existing installation.
- Not enough earth for a mains energiser of 1 joule or more — those need a full 2m earth stake, or several, on Agrifence's one-metre-per-joule guidance.
How to Use
- Choose a spot that stays moist — earthing fails first in a dry summer.
- Drive the rod fully into the ground and attach the earth lead in the clamp, metal to metal.
- Keep earth rods at least 15m away from any domestic or mains earth installation.
- Where more than one rod is used, space them at least 3m apart.
- Test the earth: with the fence shorted out, a reading of more than 300 volts on the earth system means the earthing is inadequate and needs a longer or additional rod.
Specification
- Agrifence product code H4895. Barcode 5052150002132.
- Length 300mm.
- Coated and hardened steel with an integral clamp for the earth lead.
- Agrifence guidance: allow 1 metre of earth rod per joule of energiser output.
- Agrifence publish no rod diameter or weight, so neither is stated here.
Care & Caution
- Keep fence earth rods at least 15m from the earth of a house, barn or any mains installation. Earthing an electric fence into a building's earth can put pulses onto metalwork indoors.
- Switch the energiser off before disconnecting or moving an earth rod. The earth lead is part of a live circuit.
- A rod driven where children or stock walk is a trip and puncture hazard — drive it fully home and keep the top out of a gateway.
