Anco Naturals Moon Bone
Despite the name there is no bone in a Moon Bone — it is a crescent of air-dried beef cartilage, cut from the shoulder blade area and dried into a curved, slightly translucent ring. That matters practically as well as nutritionally: cartilage is softer and more flexible than bone and does not splinter, so it is one of the few long chews that suits a dog whose teeth are past their best.
Anco declare 78% protein and 6% fat, which puts it among the leanest chews in the range, with 11% crude ash. Cartilage is also where glucosamine and chondroitin come from naturally, so the joint-support argument is about the raw material rather than an added supplement.
<>Performance & Benefits
- 100% air-dried beef cartilage — no bone, and nothing added.
- 78% protein against just 6% fat.
- Softer and more flexible than bone, and it will not splinter.
- Naturally contains glucosamine and chondroitin from the cartilage itself.
- Works as a natural toothbrush, cleaning teeth as the dog chews.
- Grain and gluten free, with no added colours, salt or sugar.
Suitable For
- Older dogs and lighter chewers that cannot manage horn, hoof or hard sticks.
- Dogs on a lean or controlled-fat diet.
- Dogs whose owners want joint cartilage in the diet rather than in a capsule.
- Medium breeds looking for a long chew that is gentle on the teeth.
- Not durable enough to hold a serious power chewer — the Anco Naturals Giant Camel Braid lasts far longer.
Feeding
- Feed as a treat or reward only. Complementary pet food, used as part of a nutritionally balanced diet.
- Suitable for puppies from 8 weeks of age.
- One moon bone at a time, with the main meal reduced to allow for it.
- Ensure fresh drinking water is always available.
Composition & Analysis
- Composition: 100% beef cartilage.
- Analytical constituents: protein 78%, fat 6%, crude ash 11%.
- Sold as a single piece. Anco also list a Small size and a 200g pack of the same chew.
- Anco publish no fibre or moisture figure for Moon Bones, so none is stated here.
Care & Caution
- Anco require that pets are supervised at all times while consuming this product.
- Cartilage softens as it is worked and a determined dog can fold a whole ring into its mouth — take it away once it is small enough to swallow.
- It is a ring, so a small dog can get a jaw or a tooth caught through it. Choose the size that suits the dog.
- Ensure fresh drinking water is available during and after chewing.
