Ancol list this as the Rope Slip & Control Lead, and it does two separate jobs from one 150cm length of weatherproof nylon. Threaded one way it is an ordinary slip lead. Threaded through the infinity loop holder it becomes a head halter, taking pressure across the muzzle rather than the throat, which is what gives you steering on a dog that leans into a collar.

At 1.2cm the rope is substantial enough to hold comfortably yet light enough that a halter made from it does not sit heavily on a dog's face. The value of it is having both options on one walk: halter mode for the busy stretch past the school gates, slip mode for the field. Ancol's own guidance is to introduce the halter gradually with positive reinforcement, and that is not optional advice — most dogs object to a head halter at first.

How to Use

• For slip mode, form the loop, pass it over the head and set it high on the neck behind the ears.
• For halter mode, thread the rope through the infinity loop holder so one loop sits round the neck and one over the muzzle.
• Fit the muzzle loop so it cannot slide down to the end of the nose or up into the eyes, and so the dog can open its mouth.
• Introduce halter mode gradually with treats over several short sessions before you rely on it.
• Hand wash only. Let it dry fully before use. Do not machine wash or tumble dry.
• Inspect the rope, stitching and fittings before every use and replace the lead if anything is damaged.

Care & Caution

• Both modes tighten under pressure. Never use this lead to tether or tie a dog, and never leave a dog unattended wearing it.
• Not suitable for a dog that pulls hard without training alongside it. In slip mode the load falls on the throat; in halter mode a hard lunge falls on the neck.
• Set the loop before every walk. Check the loop cannot open enough for the dog to back out of it.
• Introduce the head halter gradually with positive reinforcement, as Ancol instruct. Do not fit one for the first time on a busy street.
• Keep the slip loop high behind the ears rather than low on the windpipe.
