Ancol Obedia Basket Muzzle – Size 9

At chin 14cm, nose 8cm, muzzle 33cm and end 29cm, size 9 is the top of the Obedia range and the only one long enough for the deepest heads Ancol cater for. Scale is part of why the basket construction matters so much at this end of the chart: the bigger the dog, the more air it has to move, and a rigid open basket is the only type that lets it.

A fabric sleeve simply holds the jaw shut, which is fine for the two minutes a vet needs and no use at all after that. Ancol state that a dog can pant, drink and take treats through this one, and that is the whole difference between something you put on at the surgery door and something a dog can wear for an hour's walk. Panting is how a dog sheds heat, so on a large dog in mild weather the open design stops being a nicety.

How to Use

• Measure first, with a soft tape, and compare against all four of Ancol's figures rather than one.
• Introduce it gradually and positively — Ancol's own instruction is to build up wearing time slowly. Start with the dog putting its nose in for a treat and nothing more.
• Fit it so the basket clears the end of the nose and the dog can open its mouth fully to pant.
• Check the dog can reach water through the basket before you rely on it on a walk.
• Clean regularly with warm water and mild soap, and let it air dry fully before use.

Care & Caution

• Never leave a muzzled dog unattended, indoors or out, and never leave one muzzled and crated or tethered.
