Timberwolf is Ancol's leather range and the oldest thing they make: top-grain bridle leather, cut and stitched in the UK, sewn down both sides with bonded thread rather than glued. Bridle leather is tanned for harness work, which is why a Timberwolf collar takes daily use for years while a fashion-leather collar peels.

Sable is the warm mid-brown of the four Timberwolf colours, and it darkens and softens as it is worn rather than cracking. This is size 5, cut for necks of 39 to 48cm, which covers most springers, working cockers, smaller labradors and mid-size crossbreeds. Measure round the neck with a tape before ordering — bodyweight is a poor guide to neck size and sizes 5 and 6 overlap.

How to Use

• Measure round the middle of the neck with a soft tape, then check the figure falls inside 39–48cm.
• Fasten so two fingers slide comfortably underneath but the collar cannot pull over the ears.
• Re-check the fit on a growing dog, and again when a winter coat comes in or moults out.
• Work the buckle through the same hole where you can, and let new leather bed in over the first few weeks.

Care & Caution

• Leather is natural and porous, so colour and finish vary a little from collar to collar. That is the material, not a fault.
• Avoid saturating it. Natural dye can transfer to a coat or to furniture while the leather is wet.
• If it does get soaked, air dry it away from direct heat. Radiators and hairdryers make leather brittle and it does not come back.
• Condition with a suitable leather conditioner about once a year, and store it dry.
• Check the stitching and the buckle holes for wear each time you condition it, and replace the collar if a hole has torn through.
