Ancol Viva Exercise & Travel Harness – Black, Large (60–85cm)

The large takes a 60–85cm chest girth, and it shares five centimetres with the medium: anything measuring 60–65cm will go in either. The tape alone will not settle it. A deep-chested dog — a Labrador, a Boxer, a Rhodesian cross — carries that girth over a barrel ribcage and wants the longer webbing of the large, which sits lower and further back. A leggy, shallow-bodied dog of the same girth, a lurcher or a Collie, does better in the medium, where the straps run shorter and there is less to gather in.

The second question is headroom. At 63cm the medium is near the top of its range and the large is near the bottom of a 25cm span, so the large keeps something in reserve for a winter coat or a dog still filling out. Poly-weave webbing, soft air-mesh lining, one reflective band, in black.

How to Use

• Measure round the deepest part of the chest, just behind the front legs, and note whether the figure lands in the 60–65cm overlap.
• If it does, judge by depth of chest and by how much growing or coat is still to come.
• Fasten the girth strap behind the elbows with the chest panel over the breastbone, then close the neck opening.
• Adjust until two fingers slide flat under the webbing, and no more.
• For car use, clip a separate tether such as Ancol's ISOfix Seatbelt, item 741600, to the harness. It is not supplied here.
• Ancol publish no washing instructions; rinse in cool water and air dry away from direct heat.

Care & Caution

• Ancol sell this as an exercise and travel harness and list it in their travel range, but publish no crash test, no safety standard and no vehicle-restraint rating for it. Do not assume crash protection.
• Ancol describe no dedicated seatbelt loop on the harness, and no vehicle tether is included. A tether is a separate purchase.
• Ancol's own instruction for their ISOfix Seatbelt is that it must be attached to a suitable harness and never to a collar, and that it does not replace a crash-tested harness.
• Used with a seatbelt or tether, a harness restrains the dog and keeps it in place. That is restraint, not certified crash protection, and Ancol claim no more.
• A correctly fitted harness must not allow the dog to back out of it. On a deep-chested dog check the girth strap has not crept back towards the waist, where it will slip.
• Inspect webbing, stitching and buckles before each journey and replace the harness if you find fraying or a cracked buckle.
• Not a tie-out point, and not to be left on an unsupervised dog that chews.
