A 35–45cm chest girth is a 10cm span, and on a growing dog that span is the useful part. A pup measuring 36cm has almost the whole range left to let out, which is usually a year of wear; one already measuring 44cm has a few weeks. So with a young dog, buy on where the measurement sits in the band, not just on whether it fits today.

Where a pup is close to the top of the small range, it is generally better to go to the medium and start it wound in, since a harness set near the end of its adjustment leaves nothing in reserve. This is the only purple Viva harness we hold in small, and purple is one of the six colours Ancol make the range in.

How to Use

• Measure round the deepest part of the chest, just behind the front legs, and note where the figure sits in the 35–45cm band.
• Fit the girth strap close behind the elbows, then close the neck opening down.
• Leave two fingers' clearance flat under the webbing, no more, and no less.
• Re-measure a growing dog every three or four weeks and let the straps out before they start to mark the coat.
• For car journeys, clip a separate tether such as Ancol's ISOfix Seatbelt, item 741600, to the harness. It is not included.
• Ancol publish no wash temperature; rinse in cool water, air dry, and reset the adjustment afterwards.

• Some retail listings describe a padded chest section and two lead clips. Ancol publish neither, so neither is claimed here.

Care & Caution

• Check the fit of a growing dog's harness weekly. Webbing that has been outgrown will chafe behind the elbows before the buckles feel tight.
• Ancol sell this as an exercise and travel harness and list it under travel, but publish no crash test, no safety standard and no vehicle-restraint rating for it. Do not assume crash protection.
• No vehicle tether is included and Ancol describe no dedicated seatbelt loop on the harness; a tether is bought separately.
• Ancol's own note on their ISOfix Seatbelt is that it must be attached to a suitable harness and never to a collar, and that it does not replace a crash-tested harness.
• Used with a seatbelt, a harness restrains the dog rather than protecting it in a crash. That distinction matters and Ancol do not blur it.
• A correctly fitted harness must not allow the dog to back out of it — the most common failure on a young dog whose measurements have changed since it was last set.
• Not a tie-out point, and not to be left on an unsupervised pup that chews webbing.
