Size 4 in Ancol's Viva padded collar covers necks from 35cm to 43cm, and the only reliable way to know whether that is your dog is a soft tape measure. Run it round the base of the neck, where the collar actually sits — lower and thicker than most people expect — draw it snug against the coat and read the number as it comes. A 38cm reading sits mid-range here, with adjustment left in both directions.

The collar itself is poly-weave webbing with a layer of soft padding behind it, a satin buckle and a loop for an identity tag. Ancol build the Viva range to be walked, run and swum in, and it machine washes at 30°C when a winter's mud has worked its way into the weave.

How to Use

• Measure the base of the neck with a soft tape before choosing, not the narrowest point behind the ears.
• Fasten the buckle, then adjust until two fingers slide flat under the webbing without forcing.
• Hang the ID tag on the loop and clip the lead to the collar's loop as well.
• Recheck the fit after a bath, a clip or a coat change — the same collar can be two holes out between August and January.
• Machine wash at 30°C maximum, do not tumble dry, and let it air dry fully before it goes back on.

Care & Caution

• Check the buckle, the ID loop and the stitching either side of them regularly, and retire the collar if any of it has gone slack or frayed.
• A tag and buckle can snag on a crate, a fence or another dog's teeth. Take the collar off for unsupervised time indoors if that is a risk.
• This is a walking collar, not a lifting handle or a restraint point.
• No bleach, no tumble drying and no drying on a radiator — heat stiffens the webbing and flattens the padding.
