The 12mm is the heavier of the two Viva rope leads and the one Ancol rate for dogs up to 50kg; this is that thickness in pink. Both sizes are 1.07m long, so thickness is the only real decision between them — 12mm for a dog with weight and pull behind it, 10mm for anything up to 30kg.

Rope leads get dirtier than they look, because mud works down into the weave instead of sitting on a flat face where you would see it. Ancol's instruction is a damp cloth and natural air drying: no bleach, no tumble dryer, no radiator. How to Use

• Clip the trigger hook to the D-ring of a well-fitted collar or harness.
• Handle loop over the wrist and the slack held in the hand, never round the fingers.

Care & Caution

• Reflective is not illuminated. Without a headlight or torch on it the weave does nothing, so carry a light or fit a lit collar band on unlit ground.
