This is the 12mm Viva rope lead in red — the thicker of the two Ancol offer, rated by them for dogs up to 50kg, so the one to buy for a strong or heavy dog. Both thicknesses are 1.07m long, and the 10mm is the version for dogs up to 30kg if that describes yours better.

The fitting on the end is a trigger hook: a snap hook with a sprung gate that you push back with a thumb, drop over the collar's D-ring, then let close. It is a good clip because a dog cannot nudge it open, but the spring is the part that eventually wears, so it is worth a two-second habit — after clipping up, pull the hook against the ring and feel that the gate has actually seated. How to Use

• Push the gate of the trigger hook back with a thumb, hook it over the D-ring, and let the spring close it.
• Pull the hook against the ring before you let go of your dog, to confirm the gate has seated.
• Handle loop over the wrist and the slack held in the hand, not wound round the fingers.
• Wipe clean with a damp cloth and allow to air dry naturally.
• Do not bleach, tumble dry or expose to direct heat.

Care & Caution

• Reflective is not illuminated. The weave gives back a driver's headlights and nothing more, so add a lit collar band or a clip-on light on unlit routes.
• Check the trigger hook and the stitching for wear before each walk — a tired spring or a frayed seam means it is time to replace the lead.
• A rope lead can burn the palm if a dog lunges and it runs through your hand. Gloves are sensible with a dog this strong.
