Baileys Light Chaff – 18kg

Light Chaff is the lowest-calorie chaff Baileys make: oat straw and alfalfa, high-temperature dried, given a very light soya oil dressing and a sprinkling of mint. At 8 MJ/kg it gives a horse something to chew through without adding much to the day's calorie total.

Starch is 2.5% and sugar 2.25%, and straw is the majority ingredient rather than alfalfa, which is what separates it from Baileys' Alfalfa Blend. It is a fibre feed rather than a balanced one, so it earns its place as bulk in a bucket alongside a balancer. Supplied in 18kg.

Performance & Benefits
  • 8 MJ/kg — the lowest-energy chaff in the Baileys fibre range.
  • Starch 2.5% and sugar 2.25%, low enough for calorie-controlled and starch-restricted diets.
  • 30% fibre, with oat straw as the main ingredient.
  • 6% oil from the light soya oil dressing, enough to keep dust down and the coat right.
  • Mint sprinkling, which keeps it palatable despite the straw content.
  • Bulks out a small feed so a good doer has something to chew rather than three mouthfuls.
<>
Suitable For
  • Good doers and horses on calorie-controlled diets.
  • Horses prone to laminitis, which Baileys name specifically for this chaff.
  • Horses on limited grazing that need forage intake kept up.
  • Making a balancer or supplement feed last more than a few seconds.
  • Not enough energy for a horse in hard work or one that needs condition putting on — Baileys Alfalfa Plus Oil is the fibre feed for that.
<>
Feeding
  • Feed alongside forage, mixed into a hard feed or fed on its own.
  • One level Stubbs round bowl holds about 0.35kg of Light Chaff, so weigh it rather than counting scoops.
  • It can replace part of the hay or haylage ration.
  • Light Chaff is not a fully balanced feed. Baileys recommend feeding it with their No.14 Lo-Cal Balancer, which supplies vitamins, minerals and protein without adding calories.
  • Baileys publish no per-workload rate for this chaff on their website; their nutrition team will set one.
