Baileys No.01 Cooked Cereal Meal – 20kg
No.01 is Baileys' original conditioning meal and it is a single ingredient: micronised wheat, cooked so the starch gelatinises and is digested in the small intestine rather than passing on to the hindgut. That is what makes 59% starch workable at all, and it is why Baileys describe the feed as non-heating despite the figure.
At 14 MJ/kg, in a meal fine enough to feed damp or as a mash, it is concentrated calories for a horse that cannot eat enough of anything else — a poor doer with worn teeth, a fussy horse, or one coming back from illness or surgery. It is a complementary feed, not a balanced one. Supplied in 20kg.
<>Performance & Benefits
- 14 MJ/kg from a single ingredient, so calories go in without much volume.
- Micronised wheat: the cooking process maximises starch digestion in the foregut.
- Ground fine enough to feed damp or as a mash, which suits a poor mouth.
- Only 1.5% ash and 2% fibre — very little of the meal is anything but usable energy.
- Mixes into an existing ration without changing its character.
Suitable For
- Underweight horses, particularly those whose teeth limit what they can chew.
- Fussy horses with moderate energy requirements that only eat small amounts.
- Convalescent and post-operative horses needing concentrated, highly digestible calories.
- Feeding on top of a balancer or broad-spectrum supplement, which Baileys specify.
- Baileys do not recommend it for horses with laminitis or gastric ulcers — Baileys No.24 Ease & Excel Cubes are the low-starch conditioning feed we stock for those.
Feeding
- Feed damp or as a mash, mixed into the existing ration.
- One level Stubbs round bowl scoop holds about 1.4kg of meal.
- Baileys cap a cereal meal at 0.5kg per 100kg bodyweight — 2.5kg for a 500kg horse — and this feed is nothing but cereal.
- Feed it with a broad-spectrum vitamin and mineral supplement or a balancer; on its own it balances nothing.
- Build up slowly over two to three weeks and split the daily amount across meals.
Composition & Analysis
- Composition: micronised wheat, 100%. Supplied in a 20kg bag.
- Digestible energy 14 MJ/kg. Protein 11.5%. Oil 1.4%. Fibre 2%. Ash 1.5%.
- Starch 59%. Sugar 3%.
- No vitamins or minerals are added, which is why Baileys ask for a balancer alongside it.
- Baileys state no BETA or FEI approval for this feed.
Care & Caution
- Baileys state plainly that No.01 is not recommended for horses with laminitis or gastric ulcers.
- Starch is 59%, the highest figure in the Baileys range. Meal size discipline matters more here than anywhere else.
- Never exceed 0.5kg per 100kg bodyweight in a single meal, and split the daily total across at least two or three feeds.
- Introduce it over two to three weeks. Going in fast risks hindgut acidosis and colic.
