Lo-Cal is the balancer for the horse that is doing perfectly well on grass and hay and does not need another calorie, but is quietly short of everything else. It is a dense pellet built round alfalfa, distillers' grains and micronised soya, with micronised linseed for omega 3 and a protected yeast culture plus Digest Plus prebiotic at 5g/kg.

The micronutrient loading is where the money goes: 30 mg/kg biotin, 800 IU/kg vitamin E, 500 mg/kg zinc and 220 mg/kg copper, delivered on 6% starch and 5.5% sugar. Baileys hold BETA accreditation for it as suitable for equines prone to gastric ulcer syndrome, and name laminitis-prone horses among its intended users.

Feeding

• Feed as the sole concentrate alongside forage, or with reduced amounts of a compound feed.
• A half-pint mug holds approximately 250g of Lo-Cal.

• Introduce gradually over seven to ten days.
