Baileys Ultra Grass – 12.5kg

Ultra Grass is pure high-temperature dried chopped grass with a very light dressing of soya oil, and nothing else. Drying it fast rather than slowly is what preserves the colour, the smell and the nutritional value, and the result is a free-flowing chaff that smells like a June field — which is precisely why it works on horses that have gone off their hay.

It is not a low-calorie feed and it is not meant to be: 22% fibre, 10.5 MJ/kg of digestible energy and 11% naturally occurring sugar. Starch sits at 1%. Baileys are explicit that the sugar level makes it unsuitable for the laminitis-prone, and that both sugar and starch figures move with the growing season.

Feeding

• Feed alongside forage and a balanced feed or balancer.
• One level Stubbs round bowl holds approximately 0.22kg of Ultra Grass.
• Feed to bodyweight, condition and workload; introduce gradually over seven to ten days.
• Clean, fresh water at all times.

• Typical analysis: digestible energy 10.5 MJ/kg, protein 11.5%, oil 3.5%, fibre 22%, ash 7.5%, starch 1%, sugar 11%.
• Baileys note that starch and sugar values fluctuate because the ingredients are natural.

• No vitamins or minerals are added; those present come naturally from the grass.

Care & Caution

• Baileys state plainly that Ultra Grass is not recommended for the laminitis-prone, because it carries the naturally occurring sugars of fresh grass at around 11%.
• The same applies to horses with EMS, PPID or diagnosed insulin dysregulation — check with your vet before feeding dried grass to any of them.
