Bedsoft Original is chopped wheat straw, grown on Bedsoft's own and neighbouring farms in Essex and put through their own shredding and chopping system before baling. The processing is the point: Bedsoft state it has a very low dust content, which is the single biggest difference between a straw bed that suits a horse and one that does not.

Bedsoft also say the processing leaves the straw more unpalatable than conventional, unprocessed wheat straw, which helps discourage bed eating — worth knowing if straw has been ruled out on your yard for that reason alone. The bale is 16kg, light enough to carry across a yard one-handed and enough to build a deep, springy bed cheaply.

How to Use

• Lay to a depth that gives a comfortable, absorbent bed, and bank the sides.
• Remove droppings and wet patches daily, then top up.
• Store bales off the ground and under cover so they do not take up damp before use.
• Spent bedding composts and goes on the muck heap as normal.
