Big K Chilla-Grilla Restaurant Grade Lumpwood Charcoal – 12kg
Chilla-Grilla is the charcoal Big K supply to restaurant kitchens, bagged at 12kg for people who cook outdoors often enough to get through it. Big K cut it from an invasive bush species in Namibia, so the raw material is a by-product of land clearance rather than a felled forest, and the bags carry full FSC chain-of-custody certification.
It is pure wood charcoal with nothing added — no binders, no accelerants — so the only flavour reaching the food is wood smoke. Big K rate it four out of five for heat output and four out of five for ease of lighting, and reckon on up to two hours of cooking time from a load.
<>Performance & Benefits
- 12kg bag of restaurant-grade lumpwood, the grade Big K supply to professional kitchens.
- Rated 4 out of 5 by Big K for heat output — hot enough for searing steak and for high-heat pizza work.
- Rated 4 out of 5 for ease of lighting: ready to cook within about 30 minutes.
- Up to two hours of cooking time from one load, so a long cook does not need constant topping up.
- Natural wood smoke flavour, with no chemicals, binders or accelerants added.
- FSC certified with full chain of custody; the wood comes from an invasive bush species cleared in Namibia.
Suitable For
- Kettle barbecues, kamados, open grills and built-in barbecue pits.
- Searing, direct grilling and high-temperature pizza ovens.
- Anyone who barbecues regularly and would rather buy 12kg than a run of small bags.
- Cooks who want wood smoke flavour rather than the smell of lighter fluid.
- Not an instant-light product — it needs firelighters and half an hour. If you want to light and cook straight away, Homefire Instant Light Lumpwood Charcoal is the one to reach for.
How to Use
- Build a base layer of charcoal in the barbecue, sit three or four firelighters in it and light them.
- Cover the lit firelighters with more charcoal, stacked into a loose pyramid.
- Leave it about 15 minutes, then rake the coals out into an even bed.
- Give it a further 5 to 10 minutes, until the coals are grey-ashed over, then start cooking.
- Close the lid and vents to smother what is left, and reuse the unburnt lumps next time.
Specification
- Weight 12kg. Big K product code RCH12FSC.
- 100% natural lumpwood charcoal; no binders, chemicals or accelerants.
- FSC certified with full chain-of-custody certification.
- Heat output 4/5 and ease of lighting 4/5 on Big K’s own scale; up to 2 hours cooking time.
- Big K publish no lump size range and no ash figure for this grade, so neither is stated here.
Care & Caution
- Charcoal gives off carbon monoxide as it burns, and goes on doing so while it cools. Never light it or cool it indoors, in a tent, awning, garage or any other enclosed space.
- Barbecue lids, grills and bowls get extremely hot. Keep children and animals well clear of a lit barbecue.
- Do not use petrol, methylated spirits or other flammable liquids to start or revive it.
- Douse spent coals with water, or leave them to go cold in the barbecue, before disposal — ash can stay hot for many hours.
