BurlyBed Original – Miscanthus Bedding
BurlyBed Original is 100% miscanthus, the crop Burlybed have been growing at Burlerrow Farm in Cornwall for more than twenty years. Their production process shreds and breaks up the hard outer casing of the cane to expose the soft, pithy inner core, which is the part that does the absorbing — that step is the difference between miscanthus bedding and chopped cane.
Nothing is added: no scent, no treatment, no binder. The material is double dust extracted before baling, it is durable enough to last in a bed rather than break straight down into dust, and it rots down faster than straw or shavings once it reaches the heap.
<>Performance & Benefits
- 100% miscanthus, with nothing added but the processing.
- Shredded to expose the soft inner core, which is where the absorbency comes from.
- Double dust extracted during processing. Burlybed are careful about the claim: they say they would never claim to be 100% dust free, only that they work to keep dust content low.
- Durable in the bed, so it does not collapse into dust after a week.
- Rots down faster than straw or shavings and can be spread on the land.
- Packed in low density polyethylene, the same material as a supermarket bag for life, made from one third recycled content and 100% recyclable.
Suitable For
- Deep litter beds, which is the system Burlybed size their guidance around.
- Horses and ponies where a low dust, untreated bedding is wanted.
- Yards with limited muck heap space, given how quickly it breaks down.
- Owners who want a British-grown bedding with a traceable single source.
- Not the format to choose if you want a bed you can wet down and mould into banks — BurlyBed Original Pellets are the product for that.
How to Use
- In a 12ft by 12ft stable, use 5 to 8 bales to set up a deep litter bed.
- Top up when necessary, often as little as half a bale a week.
- Skip out daily and lift the wet from the base of the bed.
- Let the bed build depth rather than stripping it back to the floor.
- Recycle the empty bags with carrier bags at a supermarket collection point.
