Canagan Insect Protein Dry Dog Food – 5kg
Canagan's insect recipe is 49.8% black soldier fly larvae, made up of 25% freshly prepared insects, 19.3% dried insects and 5.5% insect oil. That is the only meat protein in the bag. For a dog that has worked through chicken, lamb and fish without settling, it is a genuinely novel protein rather than another poultry in a different wrapper.
The analysis reads a little differently from the rest of the range: 31% crude protein, 14% crude fat, crude fibre up at 5% and 356 kcal per 100g, which is the lowest energy density Canagan publish for a dry dog food. Vitamin E is doubled to 250 mg/kg. It is also, straightforwardly, a far lower-carbon way to feed a dog.
<>Performance & Benefits
- 49.8% insect — 25% freshly prepared, 19.3% dried, 5.5% insect oil, all black soldier fly larvae.
- Crude protein 31% at 356 kcal per 100g, the lowest energy density in Canagan's dry dog range.
- Crude fibre 5%, higher than the 3% of the chicken and fish recipes.
- Vitamin E at 250 mg/kg, against 150 mg/kg elsewhere in the range.
- Glucosamine and MSM at 860 mg/kg each, chondroitin sulphate at 620 mg/kg, and DL-methionine at 2,000 mg/kg.
- Grain free, with sweet potato, potato, peas and potato protein.
Suitable For
- Dogs with food sensitivities that have already reacted to the common meat proteins.
- Adults and puppies alike — Canagan formulate it for both.
- Owners looking to cut the carbon footprint of feeding without moving to a vegetarian diet.
- Dogs that need a lower-calorie food but a full protein level.
- It is not fish free — salmon oil at 1.2% is in the composition, so it will not serve a dog with a fish allergy. Canagan Grass Fed Lamb would be the one to try there.
Feeding
- Adult maintenance under an hour of exercise: 80g at 5kg bodyweight, 120g at 10kg, 200g at 20kg, 290g at 30kg.
- Active adults over an hour a day: 100g at 5kg, 150g at 10kg, 240g at 20kg, 350g at 30kg.
- Puppies by expected adult weight: toy 1–5kg take 65–90g, small 5–10kg take 145–180g, medium 10–25kg take 215–255g, large 25–45kg take 375–430g.
- Because the energy density is lower than the chicken recipes, expect the daily weight fed to be similar but the bag to last a shorter time.
- Introduce over seven days in Canagan's usual steps.
