CoolStance Copra Meal – 20kg
CoolStance is copra meal — the white flesh of the coconut, dried, baked and ground. It is fed as a source of energy from oil and fibre rather than from starch, which is why it turns up in the buckets of horses that get sharp on cereals. Stance publish a non-structural carbohydrate figure of 11% and describe the meal as containing virtually no starch.
It is not a complete feed, and Stance are explicit about that: it must be fed with additional roughage such as hay or pasture to give the diet sufficient long fibre, and it carries no added vitamin and mineral pack. Fed dry or as a wet mash, it swells to at least three times its volume once moistened, so it is measured dry.
<>Performance & Benefits
- Energy from coconut oil and fibre rather than from starch and sugar.
- Stance publish 11% NSC and describe the meal as containing virtually no starch.
- 12% oil, which is high for a straight and shows in condition and coat.
- 20% minimum crude protein.
- Digestible energy of 15 MJ per kg of dry matter, so small amounts count.
- Fed dry or soaked into a mash, which suits poor chewers and hot weather.
Suitable For
- Horses that become sharp or unsettled on cereal-based feeds.
- Horses needing condition without a high-starch bucket.
- Broodmares, lactating mares and weanlings, at Stance's own published rates.
- Feeding alongside a vitamin and mineral source rather than instead of one.
- Not suitable as a horse's only hard feed — it is a straight, not a complete feed, and a balancer such as Blue Chip Original belongs alongside it.
Feeding
- Stance's rates for a 500kg horse in light to medium work: 1–4kg daily, fed as 0.5–2kg per feed.
- Broodmares in the last trimester up to 3kg daily; mares in early lactation 3–4kg daily.
- Weanlings 0.5–1kg daily. Foals free choice in a creep feeder.
- At the light-work end of that range a 20kg sack lasts a 500kg horse about 20 days; at 4kg a day it lasts five.
- Feed dry or wet. Moistened, it swells to at least three times its volume, so measure it dry and soak in a bucket with room to spare.
- Always feed with hay or pasture for long fibre.
Composition & Analysis
- Composition: coconut meal (copra), dried, baked and ground. Nothing else.
- Typical analysis on a dry matter basis: crude protein 20% minimum, oil 12%, crude fibre 12–15%, NSC 11%, digestible energy 15 MJ/kg DM.
- Stance describe the meal as containing virtually no starch and publish no separate starch or sugar percentage. A figure of under 2% starch appears on some retail listings; it is not Stance's published figure.
- No added vitamins or minerals. 20kg sack.
Care & Caution
- Not a complete feed. Stance require additional roughage — hay or pasture — for long fibre, and a vitamin and mineral source alongside it.
- It swells to at least three times its volume when wet. Soak it in a bucket with plenty of room.
- Introduce gradually over a week or more, as with any change of feed.
