Dodson & Horrell Electrolytes – 2kg
A powdered blend of electrolyte salts for horses that sweat heavily. Sweat carries away sodium, chloride and potassium in quantity, and a horse that has lost them will not rehydrate properly on water alone — the thirst response itself depends on the salts being replaced. This supplies them at 16.7% sodium, 30.7% chloride, 5% potassium, 1.7% calcium and 1.7% magnesium.
It is fed at 12g per 100kg bodyweight, either stirred into slightly dampened feed or mixed with water at one 50ml scoop per 2.5 litres, which gives an isotonic oral rehydration solution. Dextrose at 13% makes it palatable and aids uptake of the sodium across the gut wall.
<>Performance & Benefits
- Replaces the sodium, chloride, potassium, calcium and magnesium lost in sweat.
- Encourages the horse to drink, which is what actually drives rehydration.
- Dextrose at 13% aids palatability and sodium uptake.
- Can be fed in damp feed or mixed as an isotonic drink at 1 scoop per 2.5 litres.
- A fine powder that mixes readily rather than sitting on top of the feed.
Suitable For
- Horses sweating heavily and in hard work.
- Horses travelling long distances, or working in very hot weather.
- Competition horses on the day and through recovery.
- Horses on low levels of hard feed, where the ration supplies little salt.
- Not a substitute for a vitamin and mineral supplement — Daily Vitamins & Minerals covers that job.
Feeding
- Feed 12g per 100kg bodyweight per day. The enclosed scoop holds 50ml.
- A 200–400kg pony: roughly half to one scoop. A 400–600kg horse: roughly one to one and a half scoops.
- Add to slightly dampened feed, or mix at 1 scoop per 2.5 litres of water.
- Always offer plain fresh water alongside any electrolyte solution.
Composition & Analysis
- Composition: sodium chloride, calcium gluconate, magnesium sulphate, dextrose, potassium chloride. 2kg.
- Sodium 16.7%. Chlorides 30.7%. Potassium 5.0%. Calcium 1.7%. Magnesium 1.7%.
- Glucose 13.0%. Copper 333mg/kg.
Care & Caution
- Do not exceed the stated rate without advice from Dodson & Horrell or your vet. Oversupplying salts places a load on the kidneys.
- Never feed an electrolyte to a dehydrated horse that has no access to water.
