Equerry Minty Horse Treats – 20kg

A spearmint-flavoured nugget built on wheatfeed, grass meal and a high-fibre oat by-product, with molasses, limestone and soya oil. Equerry sell them as a treat that can also go into the bucket, and the 20kg sack is the yard size — enough to share round a livery, or to last one horse a very long time.

The mint is what does the work. Spearmint is one of the few flavours a genuinely fussy horse will reliably take, so these earn their keep as a way of getting a horse to accept a feed it has been turning down, as much as for hand-feeding over a stable door.

<>
Performance & Benefits
  • Spearmint flavouring, which fussy feeders take when they will take little else.
  • 18% fibre, with grass meal and a high-fibre oat by-product in the mix.
  • Soya oil included for coat condition.
  • Fed by hand, in a treat ball, or mixed into the bucket.
  • 20kg sack — a yard quantity rather than a tub.
<>
Suitable For
  • Horses and ponies in normal work, fed as an occasional treat.
  • Tempting a fussy feeder to take a bucket.
  • Treat balls and stable toys.
  • Yards and liveries buying in bulk, or sharing a sack.
  • Not for a laminitic, EMS or PPID horse: starch is 11% and sugar 7%. A low-sugar fibre feed such as British Horse Feeds Fibre-Beet is the safer way to tempt one of those.
<>
Feeding
  • Feed by hand, in a treat ball, or added to the feed to tempt a fussy feeder.
  • Equerry publish no maximum daily quantity for these. Feed them as a treat, not as a ration.
  • Where they go into the bucket, count them within the hard feed rather than on top of it.
  • Introduce them gradually, as with any new feed.
  • Forage and clean fresh water at all times.
<>
Composition & Analysis
  • Composition: wheatfeed, grass meal, high-fibre oat by-product, molasses, permitted binder, limestone, spearmint flavouring, soya oil, calcium propionate.
  • Typical analysis: digestible energy 11 MJ/kg, protein 12%, oil 3.75%, fibre 18%, sugar 7%, starch 11%.
  • Equerry declare no added vitamins or minerals for this product beyond the limestone in the composition, so none are listed here.
  • 20kg sack.
  • These are sometimes described as low in sugar and free from cereal grain. Equerry's own figures are 7% sugar and 11% starch, and the first-named ingredient is wheatfeed, so neither description is repeated here.
<>
Care & Caution
  • At 11% starch and 7% sugar these are not suitable for horses prone to laminitis, or with EMS or PPID.
  • Hand-feeding treats encourages nipping in some horses. A bucket or a treat ball avoids that.
