Equigrow Soil Conditioner – 40L, Peat-Free Horse Manure

The Soil Conditioner is Equigrow's coarser manure-based product: horse manure and straw with a small amount of wood shavings for aeration, screened to 40mm rather than the finer grade. The larger particle size is deliberate — it is what opens up a heavy soil, rather than simply feeding it.

Equigrow compost it for about a month before shredding, then keep turning it for a further three. The heat that generates is what kills off most weed seed and pathogen before the material is bagged, and it matters: unfinished manure brings its own weeds with it.

Performance & Benefits
  • Horse manure and straw with a small amount of wood shavings for aeration, screened to 40mm.
  • About a month of composting, then shredding, then three more months of turning — heat that Equigrow say kills most pathogens and weed seeds.
  • Improves moisture retention, structure and texture as well as fertility.
  • Opens up heavy clay and gives body to light sandy soils.
  • Supports growth in vegetables, fruit trees and flowers, roses in particular.
  • Peat-free, with no added chemicals.
<>
Suitable For
  • Vegetable gardens, fruit trees and flower beds needing fertility and structure together.
  • Rose beds, which take particularly well to a horse manure base.
  • Heavy clay soils that need opening up.
  • Light sandy soils that need body.
  • Not a fine mulch or a container compost — at 40mm it is too coarse for pots, where Equigrow's Organic Green Compost screened to 10mm is the one to reach for.
<>
How to Use
  • Dig it into beds, borders and vegetable plots ahead of planting, or use it as an ongoing improver.
  • Equigrow's own instruction is to till the soil to four or five inches, clear any debris, and spread it across the bed.
  • Equigrow list it as usable all year round.
  • Keep it clear of stems and crowns.
  • Do not apply to frozen, snow-covered or waterlogged ground.

Specification
  • 40 litre bag, approximately 18.5kg. Barcode 5060783790012.
  • Horse manure, straw and a small amount of wood shavings, screened to 40mm.
  • Ingredients are locally sourced from stable yards near the composting site.
  • Peat-free, with no added chemicals.
  • Equigrow publish no NPK analysis for it, so no percentages are quoted here.
<>
Care & Caution
  • Wear gloves when handling it and wash your hands afterwards, particularly before eating.
  • Do not use it neat as a potting or seed compost — at this strength and particle size it is wrong for young roots.
  • Damp a dry bag down before tipping it rather than breathing the dust.
  • Keep it clear of stems and crowns when spreading, where trapped moisture causes rot.
