The Classic is the retractable lead flexi built their name on, and the S tape version is the small-dog end of the range: 5 metres of flat woven tape for dogs up to 15kg, in a handle weighing around 200g. Tape rather than cord is the right choice at this size — it is wider, easier to see and far less likely to wrap tightly around a leg or a hand than a thin cord.

The spool keeps light tension on the tape at all times, so it never slackens into a loop on the pavement; as the dog comes back towards you the tape retracts into the handle. A thumb brake stops the dog where it is and the lock button holds the chosen length, so you can shorten to heel length at a kerb and let the full 5 metres back out in an open field. Sold here in black; flexi also make it in red, pink, blue and olive.

How to Use

• Hold the handle in one hand with your thumb over the brake button before you clip on.
• Press and hold the brake to stop the tape; push the lock button while braked to fix the length.
• Walk the dog on a short locked length beside roads and let it out only where it is safe.
• Let the tape retract under control rather than dropping the handle — a dropped handle is dragged after the dog and frightens it.
• Keep the tape and the handle dry and free of grit; wipe the tape down after muddy walks.

Care & Caution

• Never grab a running tape. Moving webbing under load can cut or burn the hand, and a tape wrapped around a finger or a leg can do real damage.
• Keep bare legs clear of the tape when the dog circles you.
• Check the tape for fraying and the clip for wear before every walk, and retire the lead if the tape is cut.
• Retractable leads give a dog several metres of run-up. Keep it locked short near traffic, other dogs and children.
• Not for tethering. Do not use it to tie a dog up or leave a dog unattended on it.
