Red Gorilla Shovel – Red
Red is the house colour and the easiest of the Gorilla Shovels to spot lying flat in bedding or snow, which is exactly where shovels get left and then trodden on. It is the same moulding as the rest of the range in a colour that does not vanish.
One piece of polypropylene, 100cm long, 32.5cm across the blade, 1.2kg in the hand. The D-handle is wide enough to grip in gloves, and with no metal in the tool at all there is nothing to corrode, nothing to spark and nothing to work loose from the shaft.
<>Performance & Benefits
- One-piece moulded polypropylene — blade, shaft and handle are a single unibody with no joint to work loose or shear off.
- 1.2kg all in, which is roughly half what a comparable steel-and-ash shovel weighs.
- 100cm long with a 32.5cm blade, so it is a full-height tool rather than a stunted yard scoop.
- Wide D-handle grip that lets you drive from the shoulder rather than the wrist, and take some of the strain off your back.
- No metal parts anywhere, so it is non-sparking and there is nothing to rust, seize or corrode.
- Red Gorilla rate it UV, frost and weather resistant, which is why it can live outside against a wall.
Suitable For
- Mucking out, skipping out and moving bedding, shavings and muck.
- Clearing snow off yards, paths and ramps.
- Shifting loose soil, sand, gravel, compost and grain.
- Sites and stores where a non-sparking, metal-free tool is wanted near fuel or dust.
- Not a digging tool. It will not break or turn hard, stony or frozen ground — a steel spade is the tool for that, and this one is for moving what is already loose.
How to Use
- Take the D-handle in your leading hand and the shaft low in the other, and push from the legs rather than lifting from the back.
- Load into the deep scoop and lift; do not swing a full blade sideways, which twists the shaft.
- Rinse mud, muck and salt off after use and stand it head-down to drain.
- Store it under cover in a hard frost — plastic of any kind is at its most brittle when it is cold.
Specification
- Length 100cm, blade width 32.5cm, weight 1.2kg — Red Gorilla's own published figures.
- One-piece moulded polypropylene with a D-shaped handle. No metal parts; non-sparking.
- UV, frost and weather resistant. Colour: Red. Red Gorilla list nine colours.
- A length of 101cm and a width of 31.5cm appeared on this listing previously; Red Gorilla's figures are 100cm and 32.5cm and those are used above.
Care & Caution
- The blade is polypropylene, not steel. Levering under a wedged stone, compacted muck or frozen bedding is what breaks plastic shovels — if it will not lift, break it up first with something else.
- Do not use it to chip ice or dig frozen ground. Cold plastic is brittle plastic, and the edge will chip rather than bite.
