Peanuts have to be fed through mesh. A bird pecks crumbs off a whole nut through the wire rather than carrying the nut away whole, and that one design point is what makes a peanut feeder different from a seed feeder with wide ports. This is the compact Heavy Duty version, in aluminium finished in black.

It shares the range's all-in-one base — a single wide piece under the mesh that gives birds somewhere to stand and catches the peanut fragments that would otherwise end up in the lawn. Nuthatches and great spotted woodpeckers will use a peanut feeder as readily as the tits will, and both are worth having in a garden.

Suitable For

How to Use

• Fill through the lid with whole peanuts sold for wild birds.
• Hang from a feeding station arm, a hook or a branch, within a few metres of cover.
• Tip out and discard any peanuts that have got damp before topping up.
• Wash weekly in warm water with a bird-safe hygiene product, and dry fully before refilling.
• Clear the base of crumbs at every refill.

Care & Caution

• Only ever feed peanuts from a mesh feeder, never loose on a table or a ground tray. Adults carry whole nuts to the nest and nestlings choke on them.
• Through the breeding season, roughly April to August, kibbled peanuts or sunflower hearts are the safer choice even in a mesh feeder.
• Buy peanuts sold for wild birds and tested for aflatoxin. Aflatoxin from mouldy nuts kills birds, and it is not visible.
• Throw away peanuts that have got wet in the feeder rather than letting them dry out and stay in.
