Nyjer is the tiny black oil seed that goldfinches, siskins and redpolls will take in preference to almost anything else, and it needs a feeder built for it — the ports have to be fine enough that the seed does not simply pour out onto the lawn. This is Honeyfield's heavy-duty version, in brushed stainless steel.

Stainless steel is the reason to choose this one over a powder-coated feeder. There is no coating to chip and no rust where it does, it stands up to squirrels chewing at the ports, and it can be scrubbed hard on a fortnightly cycle without the finish giving up.

How to Use

• Fill with nyjer seed only, and only as much as the birds will clear in a fortnight.
• Hang it clear of any fence or branch a squirrel can launch from, and where you can see it from the house.
• Take it down and wash it every two weeks in hot water with washing-up liquid or a proprietary feeder cleaner, then dry it before refilling.
• Tip out and bin any seed that has clumped or gone damp rather than topping up over it.
• Site it within a few metres of cover so finches have somewhere to retreat to.

Care & Caution

• Dirty feeders spread trichomonosis and salmonella through garden finch flocks. Clean this one fortnightly and move it around the garden occasionally so droppings do not build up in one spot beneath it.
• If you see a bird that is fluffed up, lethargic or struggling to swallow, take the feeders down, clean everything and leave a fortnight before starting again.
