Honeyfield's Heavy Duty Nyjer Seed Feeder – Purple

Honeyfield's heavy-duty nyjer feeder is a powder-coated steel tube in purple, with a quick-release base for cleaning and a large stainless steel handle for hanging. The colour is more useful than it looks: when you are rotating several feeders through the wash, being able to tell them apart at a glance saves a certain amount of muttering.

Nyjer is a specialist seed — tiny, oily and expensive — and the birds it brings in are goldfinches, siskins and redpolls rather than the general crowd. A feeder with ports cut for nyjer is the only way to serve it without losing most of it on the ground.

<>
Performance & Benefits
  • Powder-coated steel lid and base, considerably more robust than a plain plastic tube.
  • Quick-release base, so the feeder opens out and can be washed properly.
  • Large stainless steel handle, easy to hook on and off in gloves.
  • Ports sized for nyjer seed.
  • Purple finish, easy to pick out among several feeders.
<>
Suitable For
  • Goldfinches, siskins and redpolls.
  • Gardens already running a seed or fat feeder and wanting to add finches.
  • Hanging from a feeding station, a wall bracket or a branch.
  • Keepers who want a steel feeder without the price of stainless.
  • Nyjer only. Sunflower hearts and mixed seed will not flow through nyjer ports — a standard Honeyfield's seed feeder handles those.
<>
How to Use
  • Fill with nyjer seed only, and only what will be eaten within a fortnight.
  • Release the base and empty out old seed and dust before every refill.
  • Wash every two weeks in hot water with washing-up liquid or a proprietary feeder cleaner, and dry before refilling.
  • Hang it near cover, but not within jumping distance of a fence or wall.
  • Nyjer takes time to catch on. Give a new feeder a few weeks before deciding it is in the wrong place.
<>
Specification
  • Powder-coated steel construction in purple, with a stainless steel hanging handle.
  • Quick-release base for cleaning.
  • For nyjer (niger) seed.
  • Honeyfield's product pages are unavailable at the time of writing, so no dimensions are confirmed here. A length of 43cm including the hook and a diameter of 7cm appear on retail listings and on this product's earlier copy; we have not been able to check them against Honeyfield's own figures.

Care & Caution
  • Wet nyjer clumps and moulds quickly. Empty and dry the tube rather than topping up over old seed.
  • Finch flocks are hit hard by trichomonosis, which spreads at feeders. Clean fortnightly, move the feeder around the garden, and stop feeding altogether if you see a sick bird.
