Horslyx Garlic Balancer – 15kg Field Lick
The 15kg Garlic tub is the field answer to fly season: about sixty days for one 500kg horse, or several weeks for a group turned out together. One tub sited in the shade will usually see a small herd through the worst of the midges.
Garlic is also the lowest-sugar lick Horslyx make, at 30% against the 33% of the rest of the range, with ash at 25% and sodium at 3.5%. Pure garlic oil closes the declared composition. If you need a larger field lick than this, Garlic is one of only two formulations Horslyx also make in 40kg and 80kg.
<>Performance & Benefits
- 15kg, roughly sixty days for one 500kg horse and several weeks for a small group.
- Pure garlic oil in the declared composition, for help against biting insects.
- Sugar at 30% — the lowest of any Horslyx Balancer.
- Sodium 3.5% and ash 25%, both higher than the Original lick.
- Full vitamin and trace element package: A 25,000iu, D3 5,000iu, E 1,200mg, biotin 12mg per kg.
- Weatherproof, and designed to be used with the 15kg Horslyx Holder.
- Also made in 40kg and 80kg for larger groups.
Suitable For
- Fields of horses through midge and horsefly season.
- Small herds sharing a single lick.
- Yards wanting the lowest-sugar Horslyx option in a field size.
- Horses that will not tolerate fly spray but will take a lick.
- It carries nothing for airways — Horslyx Respiratory Balancer Field Lick 15kg is the one with menthol, eucalyptus and aniseed.
Feeding
- Horslyx give an expected intake of 250g a day for a 500kg horse, 200g for a 300kg pony and 300g for a 700kg horse.
- A 15kg tub is roughly sixty days for one 500kg horse, less across a group.
- Put it out before the flies build rather than once they have arrived, and introduce it slowly.
- Horslyx design the 15kg tub for the 15kg Horslyx Holder, which is weatherproof and can stand as a floor feeder.
- Feed alongside forage and fresh water.
Composition & Analysis

- Analytical constituents: crude oil and fats 6%, crude protein 6%, crude fibre 0.25%, crude ash 25%, sugar (as sucrose) 30%, calcium 2.3%, phosphorus 1.6%, magnesium 0.4%, sodium 3.5%.
- Additives per kg: vitamin A 25,000iu, vitamin D3 5,000iu, vitamin E 1,200mg, vitamin B12 220mcg, biotin 12mg.
- Trace elements per kg: copper 540mg from copper (II) sulphate plus 60mg as copper chelate of glycine, zinc 1,080mg from zinc sulphate plus 120mg as zinc chelate of glycine, manganese 800mg, iodine 6mg, selenium 5mg.
- Horslyx publish no inclusion level for the garlic oil and no figure for the degree of insect deterrence, so neither is stated here.
- Horslyx describe the whole Balancer range as extremely low in starch but publish no starch percentage, so none is stated here.
Care & Caution
- Horslyx state that their Balancers are suitable for horses and ponies susceptible to or suffering from laminitis, introduced gradually with no more than ten minutes' access at first.
- If the forage ration is being restricted, Horslyx say not to allow free access to the lick — a hungry horse is more likely to over-consume it.
- Sodium is 3.5% here against 2.5% in the Original — a field lick of this size needs water permanently available.
- A shared tub can be monopolised by one horse; a second lick is usually the answer.
