Hotmax Recycled Natural Wood Fuel Logs – 20kg

Hotmax logs are recycled softwood dust and wood particles, left over from timber processing and compressed into dense discs with nothing added. The point of compressing them is moisture: Hotmax put theirs at 7%, against the 20–25% of seasoned hardwood, and dry fuel is what turns wood into heat rather than into steam and smoke.

What that buys in practice is 17–18 MJ/kg of energy and around 3% ash. They light without firelighters if you stand two or three thin discs in a tent over a screw of paper, and they stack indoors rather than needing a log store. The 20kg bag is the larger of the two sizes Hotmax bag them in.

Performance & Benefits
  • 100% recycled natural softwood dust and wood particles, with no additives of any kind.
  • Moisture content 7%, against 20–25% for seasoned hardwood.
  • Energy output 17–18 MJ/kg.
  • Around 3% ash residue, so there is markedly less to clear out between fires.
  • Lights with paper alone — no firelighters and no kindling needed.
  • Woodsure Ready to Burn certified, the scheme UK regulations point at for domestic wood fuel.
<>
Suitable For
  • Wood-burning stoves, multi-fuel stoves and open fires.
  • Outdoor fire pits, chimineas and wood-fired ovens.
  • Households with nowhere to season and store split logs.
  • Anyone who wants a consistent fuel rather than a variable load of cordwood.
  • Not a smokeless fuel and not legal on an open fire in a smoke control area — Pagan Smokeless Coal is the product for that.
<>
How to Use
  • Stand two or three thin discs in a tent shape over a couple of screws of dry paper, and light the paper.
  • Add whole logs once the tent has caught and the fire is drawing.
  • Give it plenty of air while it establishes, then damp down as you would with any wood fuel.
  • Store the bag indoors or under cover. Compressed logs swell and crumble if they get damp.
  • Have the chimney swept on the normal schedule for wood fuel.

Specification
  • Composition: 100% recycled natural softwood dust and wood particles. No additives.
  • Moisture content 7%. Energy output 17–18 MJ/kg. Ash residue approximately 3%.
  • 20kg bag. Hotmax also bag the same logs in 10kg.
  • Woodsure Ready to Burn certified, for moisture content below the 20% required by UK regulations.
  • Hotmax publish no log dimensions, no count per bag and no burn time, so none is stated here.

Care & Caution
  • Never burn these in an unventilated room, or in an appliance not designed for solid fuel. Carbon monoxide from a starved fire is odourless — fit a working CO alarm.
  • Do not overload the firebox. Compressed logs give more heat per kilo than split wood and a small stove is easily overfired.
  • Use a fireguard, and keep the appliance door shut where it is designed to be shut.
  • Let ash cool completely and clear it into a metal bin, never a plastic one or a bag.
