This is the headcollar to buy when one has to stay on in the field. Hy build a touch tape breaking point into it, so that if the horse catches the headcollar on a gatepost or a fence rail the hook and loop parts under load instead of holding the horse by the head. Cob is the middle of Hy's three sizes, between Pony and Full.

Everything else is a conventional nylon web headcollar: hard-wearing webbing, a padded nose, a single buckle and an adjustable noseband, plus a quick release clip on the cheek so you can drop it off a horse that is standing badly. Hy list sizes as Pony, Cob and Full and publish no measurements in centimetres, so if your horse is between sizes, measure an existing headcollar rather than guessing.

How to Use

• Fit the noseband two fingers below the projecting cheekbone, with room for two fingers under the jaw.
• Adjust the headpiece buckle so the throat sits clear of the windpipe and the cheekpieces run straight.
• Press the touch tape breaking point fully closed each time you fit it — it only works to the right load if it is fully engaged.
• Wash the webbing in cool water and let it dry naturally. Do not use fabric conditioner or bleach.
• Pick hay, grass seed and mud out of the hook and loop, or it will not close properly.

Care & Caution

• A breakaway headcollar is designed to fail under load. Never tie a horse by it and never rely on it to restrain one.
• The breaking point only works if the hook and loop is clean and fully closed. Check it every time the headcollar goes on.
• Check the nose and cheeks daily for rubs, particularly on a horse living out in it through a wet spell.
• Replace the headcollar once the hook and loop has parted a few times and no longer grips — its breaking load is no longer predictable.
