Keratex Hoof Putty – 200g

Once an abscess has been opened, or a seedy toe resected, you are left with a hole that will happily take in every bit of mud and water the horse walks through. Hoof Putty is Keratex’s answer: a malleable wax carrying slow-release organic disinfectants and antibacterials, which you warm in your hands and press into the cavity until it is level with the surrounding horn.

It is self-adhesive and flexible, so it moves with the foot instead of cracking out, and Keratex say it will not drop out or deteriorate in the hole. It will also hold a tube in place if the cavity is being flushed or drained. The 200g tin is enough for repeated packing through a recovery, and it is a management aid rather than a treatment — the vet or farrier still runs the case.

How to Use

• Start with a clean, dry hoof and clean, dry hands.
• Work a piece of putty in your hands until it softens and turns tacky.
• Press it firmly into the cavity until it sits level with the surrounding horn.
• On an unshod foot, check weekly and replace as needed.
• On a shod foot, only cold shoeing or gluing should be used over the putty, and it must be replaced at the next shoeing.

Care & Caution

• Never pack a cavity that is still discharging or has not been assessed — sealing infection in is worse than leaving it open. Get the vet or farrier to see it first.
• Only cold shoeing or gluing over the putty. Hot shoeing over it is not appropriate.
• Contains disinfectants: keep out of eyes, wash your hands after handling, and keep the tin away from children and animals.
• Check the packed foot regularly and stop if the horse becomes lame or the area becomes hot or painful.
