KM Elite Padded Headcollar – Navy, XXS (Colt)
XXS is KM Elite's Colt fitting, the second smallest they make, sitting just above XXXS (Shetland). It is the size for a foal or a yearling being taught to lead, where the headcollar is going on and off several times a day and the head underneath it is still soft.
That is exactly the job the padding is for. The headpiece and nosepiece are lined rather than bare nylon, so early handling sessions do not leave marks across the nose of an animal that has not yet learned to give to pressure.
<>Performance & Benefits
- The padded nosepiece matters more on youngstock than on anything else in the range.
- Double and triple weave lined nylon webbing, which is what gives the headcollar its stiffness and its life on a busy yard.
- Soft padded headpiece and nosepiece, placed where a plain nylon headcollar normally marks a horse.
- Brass-colour clips and fittings throughout, including a throat lash clip.
- The throat lash clip lets you fasten the headcollar round the neck first, which helps with a horse that lifts its head away from you.
- Made in the same colour across KM Elite's matching lead ropes, so a set can be kept together per horse.
Suitable For
- Everyday handling — catching, leading, tying up, grooming and travelling.
- XXS (Colt), between XXXS (Shetland) and XS (Small Pony).
- Foals, yearlings and youngstock learning to lead and tie.
- Yards that colour-code headcollars so the right one goes on the right horse.
- Will not fit a ridden pony — XS (Small Pony) and Small (Large Pony) are the fittings for those.
How to Use
- Fit the noseband about two fingers below the cheekbone, well clear of the soft part of the nose.
- You should be able to slide a flat hand under the noseband and two fingers under the cheekpiece.
- Adjust at the headpiece buckle, and use the throat lash clip rather than threading the whole headcollar over the ears.
- Hand wash in warm water and air dry naturally. Do not tumble dry.
- Rinse mud and sweat off before it dries into the weave, which is what stiffens nylon webbing over time.
- Youngstock outgrow this fitting quickly. Check it weekly rather than monthly during the first year.
Specification
- Double and triple weave lined nylon, with a padded headpiece and nosepiece.
- Brass-colour clips and fittings, including a throat lash clip.
- Colour Navy, size XXS (Colt). KM Elite's size run is XXXS (Shetland), XXS (Colt), XS (Small Pony), Small (Large Pony), Medium (Cob), Large (Full) and XL (XFull).
- KM Elite product code 1002031.
- KM Elite publish no neck, nose or headpiece measurements for these fittings, so none are stated here.
- KM Elite describe the clips and fittings as brass-colour; older retail copy calls them solid brass, and the manufacturer's wording is the one used here.
Care & Caution
- This is not a breakaway headcollar. The webbing and fittings are made not to give, so do not leave it on a horse turned out, loose in a stable or unattended in a trailer.
- Tie to a loop of baler twine rather than straight to a fixed ring, so something breaks before the horse does.
- Recheck the fit as the horse changes shape through the year — a headcollar left a hole too tight is what causes rubs on the nose and poll.
