KONG Classic – Small, Red
The Small is the size for a Jack Russell, a pug, a miniature poodle or a small crossbreed — KONG's guidance puts it on dogs up to about 20 lb, roughly 9kg. Get the size wrong on a KONG and the toy stops working: too small and it is a swallowing risk, too big and a little dog cannot get the rim into its mouth to work at it.
Otherwise it is the toy KONG have been making since 1976 — a hollow, snowman-shaped lump of natural red rubber with an erratic bounce and a cavity you stuff. KONG's red rubber grade is for average adult chewers; this Small carries barcode 035585111315.
<>Performance & Benefits
- Natural KONG Classic red rubber, the formula KONG rate for average adult chewers.
- Hollow centre takes kibble, peanut butter, KONG Easy Treat, KONG Snacks or Ziggies.
- Unpredictable bounce off the rounded base, so fetch stays interesting.
- Freezing a stuffed Classic makes it last far longer, which is KONG's own recommendation.
- Recommended by vets and trainers worldwide, as KONG state.
Suitable For
- Small dogs up to roughly 20 lb, about 9kg, on KONG's own published size guidance.
- Crate training, settling, and time alone.
- Average adult chewers rather than puppies or power chewers.
- Too small for a medium or large dog. The Medium, Large and XLarge Classics are the sizes for those, and the pink and blue KONG Puppy Classic is the grade for a dog under nine months.
How to Use
- Stuff loosely at first so the dog empties it quickly and learns the toy is worth working at.
- Plug the wide end with something sticky, then freeze, to make it last an hour or more.
- Give it before you leave rather than as you leave, so it is not a departure cue.
- Wash in hot soapy water after every stuffed session, or top rack of the dishwasher with the heat cycle off.
Specification
- Size Small, red. Barcode 035585111315.
- Natural rubber, KONG Classic red formula. Made in the USA from globally sourced materials.
- Part of a six-size range: XS, S, M, L, XL and XXL.
- KONG publish a weight guideline per size but no toy dimensions or weights, so none are stated here.
Care & Caution
- KONG's own sizing rule: the largest ring of the KONG should be bigger than the back of your dog's mouth. If your dog is between sizes, size up.
- In a multi-dog house, size every KONG to the largest dog as a safety precaution — that is KONG's own advice.
- KONG state that no safe dog toy is completely indestructible. Inspect for splits and chunks missing, and replace when you find them.
