KONG Gyro – Large
The Gyro is a treat dispenser built as a ring around a free-spinning centre orb. The dog pushes at it, the outer ring stays put, the middle spins and flips, and kibble drops out a few pieces at a time — which is why it holds a dog's attention far longer than a bowl does.
It is a toy to leave a dog with rather than one to play with them, and the Large is the size for a bigger dog's paws and mouth. KONG have since dropped the Gyro from their own catalogue, so what follows is confined to what can actually be verified.
<>Performance & Benefits
- Spinning centre orb inside a static outer ring gives an unpredictable roll-and-flip action.
- Dispenses kibble or small treats gradually as the dog works at it.
- Designed for independent play — the dog can use it without you.
- Turns a portion of the daily ration into twenty minutes of problem solving.
- Sized Large, for the paws and jaws of a bigger dog.
Suitable For
- Large dogs that finish a bowl of food in under a minute.
- Dogs that need something to do while left alone for a short period.
- Owners wanting food-based enrichment on days when a walk is cut short.
- Dry kibble and small hard treats rather than wet or sticky food.
- Not a chew toy and not for a power chewer — the black rubber KONG Extreme is the toy for a dog that wants to destroy things.
How to Use
- Load dry kibble or small treats into the centre orb.
- Set it down on a hard floor; carpet damps the spin and the toy stops paying out.
- Start with a generous fill so the dog learns quickly that pushing produces food.
- Wipe out the orb and ring after every use and dry before refilling.
- Put it away between sessions rather than leaving it down as a permanent toy.
Specification
- Two-part construction: a static outer ring around a spinning, treat-holding centre orb.
- Sold in the Large size; KONG also made a smaller Gyro for puppies.
- KONG no longer list the Gyro on their own website, and therefore publish no current dimensions, weight or material breakdown for it — none is invented here.
- Barcode 035585034171.
- The packaging in the box remains the authoritative source for this item's figures.
Care & Caution
- A hard treat dispenser with a moving part. Check the ring and the orb for cracks before each use and stop using it once either is damaged.
- Not a chew toy. If the dog settles down to gnaw the ring rather than push it, take it away.
- Count anything you put inside it as part of the day's food, not as an extra.
