Marksway HorseHage Ryegrass – Green Bale

The green bale is the original HorseHage, and it is cut earlier than the rest: HorseHage select ryegrasses taken at an earlier stage of growth to give better protein and energy. It is the variety to reach for when you want the forage doing some of the work the hard feed is currently doing.

HorseHage declare 9–11.5 MJ/kg and 9–12% protein, with MAD fibre at 32–36% and dry matter 55%. Starch stays at 1–2% and ESC sugar under 7.5%, so the extra energy comes from better grass rather than from cereal or added molasses.

Performance & Benefits
  • 9–11.5 MJ/kg energy and 9–12% protein, the highest specification of the HorseHage grass varieties.
  • Ryegrass cut early, when protein and energy are at their best.
  • Starch 1–2% and ESC sugar under 7.5%, despite the higher energy.
  • No chemical additives, mould inhibitors, flavourings, molasses or inoculants.
  • Dust-free by process rather than by soaking, which strips nutrients out of hay.
  • Heat-sealed bales, consistent from one to the next.
<>
Suitable For
  • Hunters, competition horses and horses in real work.
  • Heavy horses, youngstock and breeding stock.
  • Horses that need more from their forage to hold weight and condition.
  • Yards wanting to bring the hard feed ration down.
  • Too much energy for a laminitic or a good doer at rest — HorseHage High Fibre, which carries the HoofKind logo, is the variety for those.
<>
Feeding
  • Feed as forage, at least the same weight as you would feed hay.
  • Change over from hay across 5–7 days.
  • HorseHage state that a bale provides an average 500kg horse's overnight forage for three days.
  • Fed dry, as it comes. No soaking and no steaming.
  • Because it feeds better than hay, the hard feed ration can usually come down.

Composition & Analysis
  • Composition: selected ryegrasses cut at an earlier stage of growth, with no additives.
  • Energy 9–11.5 MJ/kg. Protein 9–12%. MAD fibre 32–36%. Starch 1–2%. Sugar (ESC) under 7.5%. Dry matter 55%.
  • Figures represent typical samples and vary between batches.
  • Sugar is sometimes listed elsewhere as under 5%. HorseHage's own published figure is ESC sugar under 7.5%, and that is what is stated here.
  • HorseHage publish no bale weight. The 25kg in the product title is the supplier's figure.

Care & Caution
  • Use an opened bale within 5–7 days, and the same from the moment a bale is holed.
  • Store unopened bales on pallets, not directly on ground that can puncture them.
