A complete layers ration from W & H Marriage & Sons, who have been milling at Chelmsford since 1824 and are still family run. It is fed as the whole diet to laying hens, ducks and geese from point of lay, which Marriage's put at around 19 weeks.

The part Marriage's make most of is yolk colour: no chemical pigments at all, with three different natural ingredients doing that job instead. It is a small distinction on paper and an obvious one in the pan, and it is the reason a good many keepers stay with this bag rather than a cheaper one.

Feeding

• Keep any mixed corn to a small afternoon scatter so it does not dilute the ration.

Care & Caution

• A layers ration carries calcium for shell formation. Fed to birds not yet in lay it can damage developing kidneys, so hold off until around 19 weeks.
