Nettex Equine Veterinary Surgical Scrub – 500ml

This is the bottle you reach for before anything else goes on a wound. It is a chlorhexidine-based antibacterial skin cleanser, diluted into warm water and used with cotton wool or gauze to lift dirt and debris out of a cut before a dressing, a spray or a poultice is applied. Nettex describe it as fast acting, and it is mild enough to use as often as a job needs.

It is not only for wounds. The same dilution makes a sound antibacterial hand wash for the person doing the dressing, which matters on a yard where the same hands have just been holding a headcollar. At 500ml, diluted at 25ml per litre, one bottle makes twenty litres of working solution, so it lasts a long time in a first aid kit.

How to Use

• Dilute 25ml into one litre of warm water.
• Apply the diluted solution with clean cotton wool or gauze.
• Rub the affected area gently rather than scrubbing at it.
• Repeat two or three times for a thorough clean.
• Follow with whatever wound treatment you are using.

Care & Caution

• Always dilute before use. Do not apply the concentrate neat to skin or to a wound.
• Chlorhexidine irritates eyes. Keep it away from the eyes of both horse and handler, and rinse with clean water if it gets in.
• Not for use in or around the ears, and not for flushing deep puncture wounds — that is a job for your vet.
• Stop if the skin reddens or the horse reacts, and check with your vet before using it on a horse already on veterinary treatment.
