Agnus castus, or chaste berry, is the herb people reach for when a mare’s behaviour changes with her cycle — the tension, the squealing, the objection to the girth that arrives every three weeks and then goes again. It is thought to work on the pituitary gland, which is the switch at the top of the hormonal chain, rather than on the reproductive organs themselves.
