Omega Equine Electrolytes – 1.5kg

Sweat costs a horse sodium, chloride, potassium, magnesium and calcium, and unlike water those do not come back on their own. Omega's electrolyte powder is 95.60% crude ash and 31.19% sodium — the analysis of something that is essentially mineral salts, dextrose and an apple flavour rather than a feed.

The rate is set by size and workload rather than by bodyweight alone: 15g for a pony in light or medium work up to 60g for a horse in hard work. At the middle rate of 30g a day the 1.5kg tub covers about 50 days, halving to roughly 25 days if you are feeding a horse in hard work through a hot summer.

• A horse that only needs plain salt in the feed does not need this — a Himalayan salt lick covers that job more cheaply.

Feeding

• Ponies in light or medium work: half a scoop, 15g, daily.
• Ponies in hard work, and horses in light or medium work: one scoop, 30g, daily.
• Horses in hard work: two scoops, 60g, daily.
• Omega state a 1.5kg pack lasts approximately 50 days for a 500kg horse in light to medium work. At the hard-work rate that falls to about 25 days.
• Add to feed. Clean fresh water must be available at all times.
• Omega also supply Electrolytes in 5kg and 10kg.

Care & Caution

• Never feed electrolytes to a horse that cannot drink freely. Clean water must be in front of the horse before and after feeding, or the salt load will make dehydration worse.
• Do not feed to a horse showing signs of dehydration without veterinary advice.
• Do not exceed the published rate for the horse's size and workload.
