Pagan Smokeless Coal – 10kg
Pagan's standard smokeless fuel: manufactured briquettes rather than mined house coal, and approved for use in smoke control areas. That approval is the whole reason to buy it. In a smoke control area it is an offence to burn ordinary bituminous coal on an open fire, and an authorised smokeless fuel is the legal way to have one.
Pagan describe it as suitable for open fires and for certain closed appliances, and the caveat matters — not every stove is built to take solid mineral fuel, and it is the appliance manufacturer rather than the fuel supplier who decides. The 10kg bag is the smaller of the two sizes they sell it in.
<>Performance & Benefits
- Manufactured smokeless briquettes, approved for use in smoke control areas.
- Suitable for open fires, which is where an authorised fuel is most often needed.
- Briquetted rather than graded lump coal, so the pieces are a consistent size and feed a fire predictably.
- 10kg bag, light enough to carry in from the car in one hand.
- Pagan bag the same fuel in 20kg for anyone getting through it faster.
Suitable For
- Open fires in smoke control areas.
- Closed appliances approved by their manufacturer for solid mineral fuel.
- Room heaters and stoves rated for smokeless fuel.
- Households wanting a legal alternative to house coal.
- Not a wood fuel, and no substitute for one in a wood-only stove — Hotmax Recycled Natural Wood Fuel Logs are the product for those.
How to Use
- Check the appliance handbook first. Pagan approve this fuel for open fires and certain closed appliances only.
- Lay a bed of kindling, light it, and add briquettes once the fire is established.
- Build it up gradually rather than smothering the kindling under a full load.
- Riddle the grate and keep the ashpan clear. Smokeless fuel needs air from underneath to burn properly.
- Store the bag under cover and off the ground.
Specification
- Manufactured smokeless coal briquettes, approved for use in smoke control areas.
- 10kg bag. Pagan also supply the same fuel in 20kg.
- Pagan describe it as being for open fires and certain closed appliances.
- Pagan publish no calorific value, ash content, sulphur figure or burn time for this fuel, so none is stated here.
- Higher-specification smokeless fuels in Pagan's range, such as Homefire, are sold in 25kg bags.
Care & Caution
- Carbon monoxide is the real risk with any solid fuel. Fit a working CO alarm in the room and never burn it in an unventilated space.
- Never use it in an appliance its manufacturer has not approved for solid mineral fuel.
- Have the chimney or flue swept on the schedule for solid mineral fuel, at least once a year.
- Ash from smokeless fuel holds heat for a long time. Clear it into a metal bin and let it cool there.
