Red Mills PerformaCare Balancer – 20kg

PerformaCare Balancer is the concentrated end of the RED MILLS range: 30.0% protein and a declared 3.0% starch, fed by the mugful rather than the scoop at 100–200g per 100kg bodyweight. It is cereal-grain free and oat-free, with soya bean meal, extruded soya and sunflower seed meal supplying the protein.

The point of a balancer is to fill the vitamin, mineral and amino-acid gaps in a forage-only or restricted diet without adding calories, and the fortification here is roughly four times that of the RED MILLS compound feeds — 60,000 iu vitamin A and 1,500mg vitamin E per kilogram. At 200g a day a 20kg bag lasts a 500kg horse a good while.

Performance & Benefits
  • 30.0% crude protein with added L-lysine, for topline and muscle on a low-calorie intake.
  • Declared starch of 3.0% — the lowest of any RED MILLS feed we stock.
  • Cereal-grain free and oat-free, so it adds nutrients without adding cereal.
  • Concentrated fortification per kg: 60,000 iu vitamin A, 10,000 iu vitamin D3, 1,500mg vitamin E, 200mg vitamin C, 17.6mg vitamin K3 and 15mg biotin.
  • Copper 195mg, manganese 325mg, zinc 600mg and selenium 2.0mg per kg, each including a chelated source.
  • Maerl at 2.5% and mannan-/fructo-oligosaccharides at 1% — ten times the prebiotic inclusion of the compound feeds.
<>
Suitable For
  • Good doers and horses on a calorie-controlled diet that still need full nutrition.
  • Horses on forage alone, or on less than the recommended rate of a compound feed.
  • Horses prone to laminitis, insulin resistance or EMS.
  • Competition horses travelling and working in demanding conditions.
  • Horses under stress from travel, training or a busy season.
  • Not a source of calories — a horse that needs to gain weight needs a conditioning feed alongside it, such as Red Mills Horse Care ULTRA Cubes or Red Mills Define & Shine.
<>
Feeding
  • Light work: 100g per 100kg bodyweight daily — 500g for a 500kg horse.
  • Moderate work: 150g per 100kg bodyweight daily — 750g for a 500kg horse.
  • Hard work: 200g per 100kg bodyweight daily — 1kg for a 500kg horse.
  • Reduce the rate where the horse is also receiving a fortified compound feed at or near its recommended level.
  • Feed alongside good forage with clean, fresh water always available.
  • Use an accurate scoop or scales — at these rates a rough guess is a large percentage error.

Composition & Analysis
  • Composition: soya bean meal, soya bean extruded, sunflower seed meal, alfalfa meal, mono-dicalcium phosphate, cane molasses, beet pulp, maerl 2.5%, calcium carbonate, magnesium oxide, mannan-/fructo-oligosaccharides 1%, sodium chloride, L-lysine.
  • Typical analysis: crude protein 30.0%, crude fibre 9.0%, crude oils and fats 6.0%, crude ash 17.0%. Starch 3.0%. Digestible energy 11.8 MJ/kg.
  • Minerals: calcium 4.00%, phosphorus 1.60%, sodium 0.38%, chloride 0.60%, potassium 2.00%, magnesium 1.20%.
  • Per kg: vitamin A 60,000 iu, vitamin D3 10,000 iu, vitamin E 1,500mg, vitamin C 200mg, vitamin K3 17.6mg, biotin 15mg. Iron 600mg, iodine 6mg, copper 195mg, manganese 325mg, zinc 600mg, selenium 2.0mg, each including a chelated source.
  • Earlier copy on this page gave crude fibre as 8%, listed Acidbuf and MicroFOS Ultra among the ingredients and omitted L-lysine, maerl and the starch figure. RED MILLS' declared fibre is 9.0%, and the composition above is theirs.

Care & Caution
  • This is a concentrated product. Selenium is 2.0mg per kg and vitamin A 60,000 iu per kg — do not feed it alongside another broad-spectrum vitamin and mineral supplement without adding the totals up first.
  • Cut the rate back where a fortified compound feed is already being fed at its recommended level, or the horse will be over-supplemented.
  • Fed at 100–200g per 100kg bodyweight it supplies nutrients, not calories. A horse losing condition needs a conditioning feed as well.
