Rockies Baby Pure Salt Lick
This is the plain one: no added minerals, no flavouring, no colour — just compressed Cheshire salt, which Rockies call among the purest and most flavoursome in the world. Where the mineralised licks are doing two jobs at once, this block does one, and it does it for horses whose minerals already come from a balancer or a fortified feed.
Rockies' reasoning for offering it year-round is straightforward: sodium keeps body fluid in balance and prevents electrolyte deficiency, and a horse loses sodium in sweat whether it is working in July or being ridden in a school in January. A plain block also removes any question of doubling up on copper or selenium with the rest of the diet.
<>Performance & Benefits
- Plain salt with nothing added, so it does not overlap with a balancer or a fortified feed.
- Made from Cheshire salt, which Rockies describe as among the purest and most flavoursome available.
- Supplies sodium, which Rockies link to body fluid balance and preventing electrolyte deficiency.
- Rockies recommend it all year round, and particularly in hot weather or after exertion.
- Small block, suited to a single horse rather than a herd.
Suitable For
- Horses and ponies of all types, stabled or at grass.
- Horses already on a mineral balancer, where an extra mineralised lick would double up.
- Sweating horses in hot weather and after hard work.
- Safe around sheep, unlike the copper-supplemented Rockies Baby Red lick.
- Not a substitute for a full electrolyte after heavy sweating — a measured electrolyte supplement replaces potassium and chloride as well as sodium.
How to Use
- Offer in a lick holder, a manger or a shallow tray, free access.
- Keep it under cover where possible — a plain salt block dissolves quickly in the rain.
- Fresh water must be available at all times alongside it.
- Replace the block when it is licked down to a thin plate that could be swallowed.
Specification
- Compressed Cheshire salt lick for horses, with no added minerals or flavouring.
- Rockies publish no purity percentage for this block. A figure of 99.9% pure food-grade salt appeared in earlier copy on this page and on some retail listings; it is not a figure Rockies themselves state, so it is not repeated as fact here.
- Rockies publish no block weight for the Baby range on their website.
- Part of the Rockies equine range, which also includes Baby Red and Baby Yellow mineralised licks.
