Maintenance is the plainest food in the Field & Trial line and the cheapest way to feed a kennel out of season. Maize, wheat, poultry meat meal and barley make up the bulk of it, at 18% protein and 11% fat — deliberately modest numbers for a dog that is resting rather than running.

At 358 kcal per 100g it is not a low-energy food so much as a low-protein one, which is the distinction that matters when a working dog comes off a season and the work stops before the appetite does. The 15kg bag is the standard kennel size.

Feeding

• Feed dry from the bag or moistened with a small amount of tepid water.
• Skinner's publish their daily amounts as a bodyweight chart rather than a single figure, so work from the guide printed on the bag and adjust to condition.
• When a dog comes off work, cut the ration before the weight goes on rather than after.
• Change over gradually, mixing an increasing share of the new food with the old across several days.
• A complete food; nothing else needs adding.
• Fresh drinking water at all times.
