Skinner's Field & Trial Puppy Chicken – 15kg

This is the richest food Skinner's make in the Field & Trial dry range: 27% protein against 18% fat and 386 kcal per 100g, built on poultry meat meal at 30% with dried egg, brewer's yeast and marine algae meal behind it. It covers weaning to around six months, and Skinner's also list it for pregnant and lactating bitches.

Prebiotics are set high — MOS at 2,500mg/kg and FOS at 1,000mg/kg, five and ten times the adult levels — because that is the stage when a gut is being colonised. A 15kg bag is a lot of puppy food, so it is the size for a litter, a bitch in whelp or a large-breed pup.

Performance & Benefits
  • Poultry meat meal at 30%, a minimum 95% of it chicken.
  • 27% crude protein with 18% crude fat, at 386 kcal per 100g.
  • MOS at 2,500mg/kg and FOS at 1,000mg/kg for gut flora during weaning.
  • Glucosamine 250mg/kg, chondroitin sulphate 150mg/kg, seaweed 150mg/kg and yucca 100mg/kg.
  • Dried egg, brewer's yeast and marine algae meal for digestibility and omega-3 at 0.91%.
  • A wheat gluten-free recipe.
<>
Suitable For
  • Puppies from weaning to approximately six months, depending on breed and type.
  • Bitches in whelp and in milk.
  • Breeders rearing a litter, where a 15kg bag is used quickly.
  • Move to Field & Trial Junior at around six months and to an adult recipe at around eighteen.
  • It is wheat gluten-free but not cereal-free — maize is in it. A puppy that reacts to maize wants Field & Trial Puppy Lamb & Rice, which Skinner's declare maize, barley and wheat gluten free.
<>
Feeding
  • Feed four small meals a day at weaning, reducing to three and then two as the puppy grows.
  • Skinner's publish their daily amounts as a bodyweight chart rather than a single figure, so work from the guide printed on the bag and adjust to condition.
  • Moisten with tepid water for a very young puppy and reduce the water as the teeth come through.
  • Change over gradually, mixing an increasing share of the new food with the old across several days.
  • Weigh the ration rather than guessing it, and judge by body condition every week or so.
  • Fresh drinking water at all times.

Care & Caution
  • At 18% fat and 386 kcal per 100g this is a growth ration, not a maintenance one. Fed to an adult dog it will put weight on quickly.
  • Over-feeding a large or giant breed puppy on a food this dense pushes growth faster than the skeleton can take it, which is a recognised route to developmental joint problems. Feed to the chart and to condition, not to appetite.
  • A 15kg bag will outlast a single small-breed puppy. Store it sealed and cool, and buy the 2.5kg if one pup is all you are feeding.
