SPILLERS Calm – 3kg
Calm is a pelleted calming supplement fed at 50g or 100g a day depending on bodyweight, so a 3kg tub is 30 days for a horse over 450kg and twice that for a pony. Magnesium is the core of it, supplied at 10g per 100g from two sources — magnesium oxide and magnesium sulphate — on the basis that two forms give a better chance of absorption than one.
Around the magnesium sit B vitamins, yeast, lysine and arginine, and four traditional calming herbs: chamomile, passiflora, lemon balm and hops. Spillers are careful about what they claim for these, and so are we. This is a supplement to feed alongside a sensible diet and enough turnout, not a substitute for either.
<>Performance & Benefits
- Magnesium at 10g per 100g, from magnesium oxide and magnesium sulphate.
- Vitamin B1 at 400mg and B6 at 200mg per 100g, with 20mg folic acid.
- Yeast at 10g per 100g, plus lysine 5g and arginine 2g.
- Chamomile 10g, passiflora 3g, lemon balm 3g and hops 3g per 100g.
- Pelleted, so it measures accurately with the enclosed 50g scoop and mixes into a small feed.
- 3kg tub is 30 days for a horse over 450kg.
Suitable For
- Nervous, spooky or over-reactive horses in ordinary work.
- Horses that struggle with travelling, clipping or a new yard.
- Short-term use through a specific event, or daily feeding for a consistently anxious horse.
- Horses whose forage-based diet is otherwise sensible — a calmer will not fix a horse that is over-fed on starch.
- Not suitable for pregnant or lactating mares; Spillers state this plainly, and Spillers Original Balancer is the better everyday choice for a broodmare.
Feeding
- Horses and ponies up to 450kg: 50g daily, one level scoop.
- Horses over 450kg: 100g daily, two level scoops.
- Mix into the existing feed and introduce over several days.
- Feed consistently; herbal and mineral supplements are judged over weeks, not on the first day.
- Clean fresh water at all times.
Composition & Analysis
- Composition: magnesium oxide, grass high temperature dried, lucerne (alfalfa), magnesium sulphate, yeast products, chamomile, rapeseed oil, lemon balm, passiflora, hops, molasses, sodium chloride (salt).
- Actives per 100g: magnesium 10g, chamomile 10g, yeast 10g, lysine 5g, passiflora 3g, lemon balm 3g, hops 3g, arginine 2g.
- Vitamin B1 400mg, vitamin B6 200mg, folic acid 20mg per 100g.
- 3kg tub, pellet, approximately 50g per scoop.
- Spillers publish actives per 100g rather than a full proximate analysis, so no protein, oil or fibre figures are stated here.
Care & Caution
- Do not feed to pregnant or lactating mares. This is Spillers' own instruction on the pack.
- A sudden change in behaviour is more often pain than temperament. Rule out ulcers, teeth, saddle fit and back soreness with your vet before treating it as a nervous problem.
- If your horse competes under FEI, BHA or other affiliated rules, check the current prohibited substance list against the herbal ingredients before you feed it.
