SPILLERS Cool Mix – 20kg

Cool Mix is the traditional low-energy textured mix: flaked barley, maize and peas over a base of oatfeed and wheatfeed, at 9.8 MJ/kg. It is the feed for the horse in light work whose owner wants a proper coarse mix in the bucket rather than cubes, and who found a standard mix made the horse sharp.

Read the label before you assume it is a quiet feed for every horse, though. "Cool" here means low energy relative to a performance mix; starch is still 20%, which is higher than several cubes in this range. Sugar is 5% and oil 4%, and the minerals are chelated. It is balanced enough to feed on its own, with forage, without a balancer.

Performance & Benefits
  • 9.8 MJ/kg digestible energy — the lowest-energy mix Spillers make.
  • Steam flaked barley, maize and peas give a textured mix most horses eat readily.
  • 10% protein and a full vitamin and mineral pack, so no balancer is needed alongside it.
  • Chelated copper at 40 mg/kg and zinc at 120 mg/kg for absorption.
  • 14% fibre, with treated cereal straw and soya hulls in the base.
  • A Stubbs scoop holds roughly 1.5kg, which makes rationing straightforward.
<>
Suitable For
  • Horses and ponies at rest or in light work.
  • Fussy feeders that will take a coarse mix but leave cubes.
  • Horses that become excitable on a competition or conditioning mix.
  • Owners wanting one balanced bucket feed rather than a balancer plus a chaff.
  • Not the feed for a laminitic or insulin-dysregulated horse at 20% starch — Spillers Fibre-Lite Molasses Free with Spillers Lite & Lean Balancer is the combination for those.
<>
Feeding
  • Introduce gradually over seven to ten days.
  • 500kg horse in light work: 3kg daily, split across a minimum of two meals, plus forage.
  • 600kg horse in light work: 3.5kg daily, split across a minimum of two meals, plus forage.
  • A Stubbs scoop holds roughly 1.5kg.
  • Keep ad-lib forage and clean water available.

Composition & Analysis
  • Composition: oatfeed, wheatfeed, flaked barley, flaked maize, cane molasses and soya oil blend, treated cereal straw (oat & wheat, sodium), flaked peas, sunflower seed meal dehulled, calcium carbonate, rice bran, molasses blend, salt, soya hulls dehulled, rapeseed oil, magnesium oxide, with added vitamins and minerals.
  • Typical analysis: digestible energy 9.8 MJ/kg, oil 4.0%, protein 10.0%, fibre 14.0%, starch 20.0%, sugar 5.0%.
  • Vitamin A 10,000 iu/kg, vitamin D3 1,500 iu/kg, vitamin E 200 iu/kg.
  • Selenium 0.30 mg/kg, copper 40 mg/kg, zinc 120 mg/kg.
  • 20kg bag. BETA NOPS approved.

Care & Caution
  • At 20% starch this is not a feed for a horse or pony prone to laminitis, or one diagnosed with insulin dysregulation or PPID, despite the name. Spillers Fibre-Lite Molasses Free fed with Spillers Lite & Lean Balancer is the low-starch option in this range.
  • Split the daily amount across at least two meals. Large cereal meals push undigested starch into the hindgut, which is where the trouble starts.
