Sundown Purple is chopped British miscanthus — elephant grass — and it is the bale in this range to reach for when the problem is wet. Miscanthus stem has a thick pithy core, and that core is what does the work: it takes moisture down into the base of the bed and holds it there, so the surface the horse stands on stays drier for longer than it would on wheat straw.

It goes through the same double vacuum de-dusting as the rest of the range and carries the same food-grade eucalyptus fragrance, added at baling. Sundown describe it as their most eco-friendly bedding, grown in Britain on land that needs no annual replanting. It costs more per bale than the wheat straw, and lasts correspondingly longer.

How to Use

• Lay a new bed with 4–5 bales in a 12ft x 12ft stable, banked or flat.
• Top up with 1–2 bales weekly according to use and the depth you want.
• Skip out thoroughly — miscanthus carries wet below the visible surface, so lifting only the obvious patches leaves it in the bed.
• Keep bales under cover. The LDPE wrap has 30% recycled content and is not intended for long-term outdoor storage.
