Guinea pigs cannot make their own vitamin C, so unlike most pet foods the thing that matters most in a guinea pig mix is how much of it there is and how long it lasts. Supreme stabilise the vitamin C in Gerty at 420mg per kilogram, and at 40–50g a day per adult a 12.5kg sack is around 250 pig-days of feed — enough for a group of four for two months.

The mix is built on extruded wheat, flaked peas and maize, alfalfa and soya, with no added sugar and natural prebiotics. Protein sits at 16%, noticeably higher than Supreme's rabbit mix, which reflects what a guinea pig actually needs rather than being a marketing figure.

Feeding

• Supreme's guide is 40–50g a day for an average adult guinea pig.
• Provide fresh vegetables daily, good quality hay at all times and clean drinking water.
• Split the daily ration into two feeds if your pigs bolt it in one sitting.
• Keep the sack closed and use it within a sensible period — vitamin C is the component that fades first.
• Do not refill until the bowl is clear, so the fibre goes down as well as the flakes.
