Hay Flakes are meadow grasses and herbs from pre-alpine meadows — over sixty varieties — warm-air dried and pressed into flakes. The reason to keep a bag on the yard is the soaking time: five minutes in cold water and they are ready, where most soaked forages want half an hour and warm water to go with it.

Thunderbrook publish 8% crude protein, 29% crude fibre, 9.7% sugar and 0.8% starch, with 6.80 MJ/kg of metabolisable energy — a low-energy forage rather than a feed that puts weight on. They are free from alfalfa, molasses and artificial additives, and dust- and mould-free, which is what makes them workable for a horse with a respiratory problem.

Feeding

• As a complete forage replacement: about 1.5kg per 100kg bodyweight a day, dry weight.
• As a partial replacement: 1kg of flakes replaces 1kg of hay.
• Mix one part flakes to two parts water and leave for about five minutes.
• Split across several feeds through the day rather than one large one.
• Fresh water at all times.
