Thunderbrook Hay Cobs – 20kg
Hay Cobs are pure alpine grass and herbs from the pre-Alpine region of southern Germany — over fifty grass and herb varieties, compressed into 16mm cobs. Nothing is added to them: Thunderbrook list them free from molasses, preservatives, GM ingredients, chemical processing, additives and binders.
They can be fed dry to a horse with sound teeth, which makes them slow to eat and good for the jaw, or soaked one part cobs to two parts water into a mash for a horse that can no longer manage hay. Thunderbrook's own analysis puts sugar at 7.6% and starch at 2%, with 20.6% crude fibre and 11.13 MJ/kg of digestible energy.
<>Performance & Benefits
- 100% alpine grass and herbs — over fifty varieties, with nothing added.
- No molasses, preservatives, GM ingredients, chemical processing, additives or binders.
- Sugar 7.6% and starch 2% on Thunderbrook's own analysis, both naturally low.
- Dust-free, which matters on a yard with a coughing horse.
- 16mm cobs that take real chewing, encouraging saliva production and slow intake.
- Fed dry or soaked, so one bag suits a young horse and a veteran.
Suitable For
- Partial or full hay replacement.
- Veterans and horses with dental problems, fed as a soaked mash.
- Horses that need occupying — Thunderbrook suggest them as treats and enrichment.
- Horses on restricted grazing that still need long-fibre intake.
- Not a balanced ration on their own. A horse fed cobs as the bulk of its diet still needs a balancer such as Thunderbrook Daily Essentials.
Feeding
- Feed dry to horses with good teeth, or soak at one part cobs to two parts water.
- Replace hay a little at a time over several days rather than all at once.
- Feed at ground level, in a bucket or trug, to keep the head down.
- Fresh water at all times, and particularly where the cobs are fed dry.
Composition & Analysis
- Composition: 100% alpine grass and herbage from the pre-Alpine region of southern Germany, over fifty varieties, compressed into 16mm cobs.
- Thunderbrook's analysis: crude protein 8.4%, crude fibre 20.6%, sugar 7.6%, starch 2%, DE 11.13 MJ/kg.
- Free from molasses, preservatives, GM ingredients, additives, binders and chemical processing.
- 20kg bag. Also made in a 5kg trial pack.
- Figures of 30% fibre, 10% protein and 11% ash have appeared on retail listings for this feed. The figures above are Thunderbrook's own and are the ones stated here.
Care & Caution
- Cobs fed dry need good teeth. Soak them for a veteran, a horse missing molars, or any horse that bolts its feed.
- Change forage gradually — a sudden switch from hay to cobs carries the same colic risk as any other abrupt forage change.
